BANYAN INTRODUCES VINES SUPPORT FOR
INDUSTRY-STANDARD i486-BASED PC SERVER PLATFORMS
Powerful combination of VINES and Latest CPU Architecture
Offers Users New High-End Server for Distributed Applications
WESTBORO, Mass., July 9, 1990 -- Banyan Systems today announced a
new software offering: VINESR for 486 Platforms, which enables
users to take full advantage of the high-performance Intel i486TM
architecture. The product is now being shipped.
The first VINES product to support i486-based PCs, VINES for 486
Platforms fully interoperates with all other Banyan servers and
Banyan certified platforms, as well as with all VINES-integrated
software options. In addition, all applications which currently run
in the VINES environment (including those developed with the VINES
Applications Toolkit) are also fully compatible with i486-based
platforms. This high level of hardware and software
interoperability gives Banyan customers complete freedom to
implement different hardware platforms as VINES servers within a
multi-server network according to their unique network
requirements.

BANYAN INTRODUCES SUPPORT FOR 486 PLATFORMS/ July 9 / Page 2
The first i486-based PC to be certified by Banyan is Compaq's new
DeskProTM 426/25. Vendors of other i486-based PC's are certifying
their platforms with VINES under the recently announced Vendor
Certification Program.
"This announcement is a demonstration of Banyan's continued
leadership in building the most powerful corporate networks based
on PC technology," said Banyan Senior Vice President James Allchin.
"Banyan has always been quick to adopt new technology. For example,
more than two years ago we were the first vendor to introduce a
full 32-bit, 386TM-based distributed NOS implementation. VINES for
486 Platforms continues this trend of new technology
certification."
The i486 architecture offers increased processing power compared
to the earlier 386, allowing CPU-intensive distributed applications
to run about twice as fast on i486 platforms as on 386 platforms.
In a corporate network environment, this performance advantage is
most beneficial to compute-intensive server-based network services,
such as VINES network mail, VINES 3270/SNA gateway, high-speed wide
and local area network bridging, and applications based on ORACLER
Server for VINES, VIA for VINES database server, and other
distributed databases or client/server applications.

The faster processor also provides benefits to typical network
users who need only file, print, global naming (offered by
StreetTalkTM), and security (offered by VANGuard).

was June 25, 1990. In addition, users of VINES for 386 Platforms
can upgrade to VINES for 486 Platforms; the upgrade package has a
U.S. list price of $1,495. VINES for 486 Platforms, Version 4.00
